| Customer Reviews: Frustration Free Kit! June 1, 2010 Lauren Nelson 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Being a naive and fairly young person I purchased my first cork screw a few years ago, a manual one. Oh man did I have some issues with that thing. That was just one of my experiences that taught me cheap isn't always better. So, looking ahead a few years and and a few ruined drinks later I purchased a knock off rabbit kit from JC Penny's. Once again my being cheap got the best of me. It was a cheap utensil that's only other accessory was a foil cutter. Not to mention the container it came in. It came in a big, hard, clear case. Which at first one would think is useful but no. It would not fit into any sliding drawer and was just way to big and took up a ton of space. On the other hand if you took it out of the case the handles would often get caught in the sliding drawers. But a month ago I purchased this Houdini Zip-Kit. For once I was not cheap and it payed off. After talking to a few friends they said Metrokane was the brand to buy. The things that sold me on purchasing this item was the brand, case, and extra wine stoppers included. I have used the cork screw a few times and it works great. It feels like a quality item and seems to work much smoother than the knock-off one I had previously. I love the additional stoppers, as you can guess I was too cheap to have purchased any previously. Now if I don't finish bottles they can stay fresh for the next day. It's really saving me money now by not pouring out extra wine. And perhaps the best part, the case. It now fits into my kitchen drawer! Overall it's a nice looking kit although functionality was my big priority. I would highly recommend this kit to ANYONE! And if it's not in your budget, save up. It's well worth it.
Give your self the gift of happyness and then share it with others! April 6, 2010 William Hardin (Virginia) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Do you wash dishes by hand? Of course not, you have a dishwasher for that to reduce your workload AND to make sure you dishes are really clean, not just rinsed in hot water. Likewise, I bet you mow your lawn with a gas/electric mower for the same reasons, as it is more work with a manual mower and it simply isn't as good of cut. (If you doubt the mower comment, mow with each a few times...I liked the idea of a manual mower until seeing the results of the mow!)
So for the exact same reasons, you should be using an upgraded bottle opener as well. If you still use the cheap straight cork screw or the "winged" design that can help a little, you simply must not have tried the Metrokane Houdini/Rabbit. The difference is night and day, the Houdini (slightly cheaper and better selling model of the Rabbit--they are normally sold in different places, hence the two "brands" for them) reduces your work and prevents the occasional cork issues. Like when you go to open a bottle and the cork falls a part, sometimes even being pushed deeper into the bottle..and don't get me started on the tiny pieces of cork that then destroy the wine.
For me, that happened maybe once every 10-20 bottles, resulting in me becoming a little stressed and frustrated. I found that it happened more often on some brands so we were forced to stop drinking some of our favorite wines. Then one day Amazon suggested the Metrokane Houdini to me. I had tried a bunch of slightly upgraded cork screws so I was very reluctant to spend more on what I thought was sure to be more of the same. It wasn't until about a week later and we ran into problems with not just one bottle but two the same night. I realized I would save money if it actually worked, by reducing my wasted wine some.
That was 8 years ago now and I haven't had a single cork problem since. Not one! But even better, the Houdini makes opening wine so much easier it is a simple, controlled process now. ZERO STRESS, finally. The funny thing about getting an Metrokane Houdini or Rabbit is that once you realize how much easier it is to use, you end up realizing everyone you know should be using one too. And it took a few years of father's days, birthdays and housewarming gifts but now everyone in my circle of friends and family has a Houdini. Now they are giving them out as gifts to their friends too.
So why get this particular set for yourself or as a gift? Two major reasons: it includes everything you need and it stores everything in the included semi-soft storage case. While the Houdini is great, things like the foil cutter, the pourer and the wine saver system help round out your tools. Not only do you save money purchasing them at the same time, you get built in places to store them so you can find them when needed. Many of these Metrokane cork screws come in hard plastic cases that honestly look cheap and don't even snap together to store the cork screw and extras. That means they are thrown out day one and you are left finding a place for the Houdini, normally in a drawer. The problem with that is that it naturally opens up, taking up a lot of space and when you reach in to grab it, there is a chance it will poke you with its sharp spiral. The EVA case included here solves that problem as it not only looks nice (reminds me of a chefs knife case, when I unzip it and pull out my tools), but it keeps everything together while protecting the items at the same time--like a knife case.
So whether you are ready to give an amazing gift that will actually get used or just discovering it for yourself, this set is the one to get. Don't do what I did, get it before your next hassle at the bottle and realize how much you can save by spending a little.
